Chaining is not only inhumane for dogs, but has taken a severe toll on this nation's children as well. In the period from October 2003 through August 2009, there were at least 277 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country.

Chained dogs, unsocialized with humans, can become very territorial of their tiny space, and any two year old who wanders into this space can be attacked and killed before adults can intervene. A recent attack in Texas in March, 2007 left 2 year old Carolina Sotello dead from head and neck wounds. She was attacked and killed by an unneutered male dog chained in the backyard, next to an unspayed female with puppies.

Would you for one second choose to live the life of these dogs? No matter what reason is given, the bottom line is that it is NOT ok to chain a dog for life. Dogs should not have to live chained or penned as prisoners, yearning for a place in a family, craving acknowledgement, respect, and love.

They DESERVE BETTER, and we as caretakers have the obligation to provide it for them.

Please consider today how you can help the dogs in your neighborhood. If you see a chained dog or a penned dog daily, it is time to take action.

NO CHAINS!

"The ordinance was originally passed because putting an animal on a [tether] was deemed cruel for a variety of reasons. " [W]e had seen a number of instances where animals [who] had been [tethered] wound up choking themselves when they tried to escape by jumping over items in the yard, such as cars or motorcycles."

-Pat Mehrhoff, senior assistant prosecuting attorney, Tucson, Arizona

"Over the years, the Washington Humane Society has gained a firsthand knowledge of the problems which the chaining or tethering of dogs cause. " Eventually the dog will break the chain and will escape the yard. Bite cases come in regularly where a dog has broken or got off [the] chain and has bitten someone while running loose. Chaining also creates a hazard for dogs, because they can become tangled and/or hang themselves."
-Adam Parascandola, director of humane law enforcement for the Washington Humane Society, Washing
ton, D.C.

DOGS DESERVE BETTER is a nonprofit organization
dedicated to freeing the chained dog, and bringing
our 'best friend' into the home and family.

Dogs Deserve Better, 2003 First Place Winner of the ASPCA/Chase Pet Protector Award, is a voice for chained and penned dogs, whose sadness speaks only through the eyes. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

ACTION ALERTS

The Giles County Sheriff's Office is looking for the person who tied up a dog and threw him into a local dumpster.

According to animal control, the four-month-old puppy was found three days after Christmas.

We're told someone tied his legs together, stuffed him in a trash bag and left him in a dumpster to freeze to death.

Doe Creek Kennels in Pembroke is now taking care of the puppy.

The owner, Allison Hollopter, says aside from having worms, and looking like he'd never been to the vet, he was in good condition.

'He was scared more than anything,' said Hollopter.' He was scared and he was hungry.'

If you know anything about the person who threw the dog into the dumpster, you can remain anonymous by calling the Giles County Sheriff's Office at 540-599-STOP.

Update 01/20/2010
Police report that Ashli Thomas, 24, of Newbern Drive, Johnson City has been arrested for filing a false police report.

Thomas originally told police and news reporters that she was stabbed by someone who dog-napped 12 dogs being housed at the Cool School for Dogs on Market Street.

According to the Johnson City Police, Thomas admitted she “made the story up because she had left the dogs unattended and had not been caring for the dogs properly.“

The owners of the business, Brad and Tamara Josselyn, along with Thomas, have been charged with eight counts of animal cruelty.

Thomas is currently being held in the Washington County Detention Center under a $5,000 bond. She will appear in court tomorrow.
